At the Overtime, a Dark Comedy Learns to Breathe: "Romeo Chang" Plays Through July 11. Barbara Blumenthal-Ehrlich's award honored play, directed by Mark McCarver, runs on the Gregg Barrios stage at San Antonio's Theater for the People.

SAN ANTONIO. Some plays argue with death. "Romeo Chang" tries to bargain with it, and finds the comedy in the negotiation. The Overtime Theater is presenting Barbara Blumenthal-Ehrlich's emotionally powerful, poetic dark comedy with a hint of fantasy through Saturday July 11 on its Gregg Barrios stage.

The story begins where most would end. Jen, in the middle of a pregnancy, learns she is dying of Stage 4 cancer. Rather than count the days, she goes looking for more of them, and finds a qi gong master named Romeo Chang who may know how to keep her here long enough to meet her child. What follows is funny in the way that only the truest things are funny: a play about parents and children, life and death, and the sacrifices we make for people we have not met yet.

Directed by Mark McCarver, the production is the work of San Antonio actors, designers, stage managers, and crew who build a whole world inside the Overtime's intimate room, where the back row is still close enough to see a held breath. The play earned an ATAC Globe Award in its earlier Overtime run, and it returns now with the same nerve and a little more tenderness.

The Overtime Theater has been Theater for the People since 2007, an all volunteer company devoted to new and unconventional work, with the door kept open to everyone. "Romeo Chang" continues that tradition. Come as you are, sit close, and let a comedy about dying remind you what it feels like to be alive.

SAN ANTONIO.
